Celebpocker – Case Study 3
www.celebpocker.com – Let us say we have a hand such as (7,7) in a Holdem game. We make a pot sized raise from middle position and get one caller. The flop then comes down (8h,9d,6d). In some ways you could say that a raise here against a fairly passive player will allow you to find out where your hand is, but if you are against a player you consider to be aggressive, I might actually check. The most likely scenario is that your opponent will raise, and if you then put in a strong reraise, you will be getting far more information when your opponent has to respond.
If they choose to fold, you have picked up a bigger pot with your semi bluff than if you had raised first. If they call, you still have your big draw to hit despite being wary of another diamond appearing on the board. Of course there is a worst case scenario of your opponent then pushing all in after your reraise. Consider though, that with aggressive players they are usually putting out tester bets in this situation, and I think there is more to be gained than lost by checking first. If they do have the goods, they may well have pushed all in if you had been first to bet anyway.
As with any situation when you are drawing to a straight, do not consider the hand won if the straight arrives on the turn, as a diamond can always appear on the river to cost you a lot of chips. For this reason, if we hit our straight without a third diamond on the turn, a large bet to protect our hand would probably be the sensible choice. Celeb pocker
